How to read Google Analytics

Below is some useful information and tips to enhance your website. We recommend setting aside at lease an hour a month to make small updates to your website.

How to read your website stats (Google Analytics)

Google Analytics is a free website analysis tool which provides sophisticated reports about traffic on your website. You should be receiving a report by email every Tuesday.

The main things you want to look at in these reports are:

  • Page 1: Visits: how many times the pages on your site have been viewed
  • Page 3: Absolute unique visitors: The number of individual people who have visited your website.
  • Page 5: Traffic Sources: How people are getting to your website.
    - Direct traffic is by typing your website address in the address bar
    - Referring sites: Other website's linking to yours
    - Search engines: people searching for a keyword or your name.
  • Page 5: Keywords: The words or phrases people used to find your website.

So now you can see a little bit about how your website is being used, great so now what? Read on...

How to get more people to your website

There are many many things you can try to do to improve your website popularity, the one I am going to focus on today is "Incoming links".

Incoming links to your site from other web pages dramatically improves search engine rankings, especially if links are from highly ranked sites. Establishing links from other quality web sites within your industry is vital for successful SEO and securing strong search results. Google deems a website’s link popularity an incredibly significant indicator. Especially when other website's, from your industry, recommend your website.

Ask subject related sites (not your competitors, more like your suppliers, partners etc) if they would be interested in a reciprocal link to your website. All you need on their website, is a simple text link like this to your own website:
My Website Title - short description of my website containing my main keyword. www.yoursite.com.au

Updating Your Website

If you have our Webitor (Website Editor) installed on your website you have the ability to edit and change your website yourself.

How you say?

  • Go to your website
  • Click the "Webitor" link at the bottom of the page
  • Enter the password
  • Click "Login"
  • Your website will load with a tool bar up the top.
  • Your website is now unlocked and ready for you to make changes.
  • Each of the tabs up the top reveals more tools to edit the website, start small and change some text...
  • Click the "save" button (top left) at any stage and your changes will be live on the Internet.
  • And don't worry about making mistakes, you can simply exit from Webitor and not save your changes.
Big Oopsy? We also keep backup versions of your website so if you accidentally save a mistake we can restore the page to its original state

Why?

Search engines deem the quality and quantity of a website’s content an indicator of the ‘importance’ of the website. By adding new content regularly, you give visitors a reason to come back. Search engine robots will also visit your site more often once they notice that you update regularly, which means that any new content you add will be indexed quicker.

It can be as simple as a news item related to your industry added to your homepage, or a customer testimonial. Just a little change once a month can make a big difference.
